Haydon had still not recovered from the fright his wife had given him when she was missing. The plan for an uprising and now the concern of a spy in one of the castles, times were becoming increasingly dangerous. He wanted to wrap her up in his plaid and leave her in the bedchamber so she would ne'er get into trouble.
This was definitely not what he had in mind when he approached the Johnstone about marrying one of his daughters. He'd wanted a meek, submissive wife who he could place in his castle and mostly ignore, except when it came to producing heirs. One who would obey his every order without question or argument.
"What is it ye wish to discuss, lass?"
She shifted around until she rested on her elbows and looked right into his eyes as if she had every right to chastise him. If it would not encourage her to think she could lecture him, he would laugh at her daring.
He, however, could not think about anything except her warm, lush body covered by the thin nightdress she wore. He reached out and began to untie the tiny ribbon holding the top of the garment together.
She swatted his hand. "Stop. This is serious."
He took a deep breath and nodded. "Aye."
"I am yer wife."
"Did ye stop what I was having such a good time doing to tell me something I've kenned for a while now?"
She had the nerve to wave her finger at him. "Doona interrupt."
He took in a deep breath. "Lass, yer getting into trouble here. You doona tell your laird not to speak."
"Nay. I dinna tell my laird, I told my husband."
God, he loved how her eyes flashed when she was angry. Also, when she was feeling passion, which brought him right back to where he had planned to be when he'd entered the bed. He rolled over onto his back and placed his linked fingers under his head. With a deep sigh, he said, "Continue, wife."
"Ye should not leave the castle for a lengthy trip without telling me."
"Nay."
"What does that mean?"
"It means I am the laird. I doona account to anyone for my time."
Ainslee jumped from the bed, yanking the bottom of her nightdress that had been caught under Haydon's leg. "I believe I will sleep in the chamber next to this one."
He reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her back. She was powerless to stop him as she tumbled and landed in the spot she'd just left.
"I dinna give ye permission to leave."
She opened her mouth, no doubt to dispute him when he drew her flush against him and covered her mouth with his. She held herself stiff for all of about ten seconds and then melted against him.
He pulled back and whispered against her lips. "Let's get rid of this nightdress."
When it appeared she wanted to continue their discussion, he covered her breast with his hand and massaged, plucking on the nipple until she gave a soft moan.
That was all the invitation he needed to reach down and pull her nightdress off.
